#RUNMBB Stumbles in Season Opener to Keene State

KEENE, NH | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team opened their 2022-23 campaign this evening on the road against Keene State. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 0-1 on the year after a lopsided 102-66 loss. The owls used a 58-point first-half explosion to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Owls jumped out to a strong 20-4 lead over the Scarlet Raiders in the first five minutes of the first half. Travis Miles and Tyrone Bowens got Rutgers-Newark on the board with a pair of layups. Levi Holton put an end to a 7-0 run by the Owls with a layup to score his first of a team-high 15 points. With five minutes to go, the Scarlet Raiders trailed by 30, however, the Scarlet Raiders' offense finished the first half on a 10-2 run.

Once again the Owls started the half off hot, using an 11-2 run to further extend their lead. Rutgers-Newark was unable to slow down the Owls' ferocious scoring pace as the 102 points allowed were the highest total allowed since a triple overtime, 118-116, win over New Jersey City University during the 2010-11 season.
