Lambert Powers #RUNWBB Past Cedar Crest for First Win of the Season

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team won their season opener in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic against Cedar Crest this afternoon, 74-53, behind Syncere Lambert's 20 points. Head coach Stacey Townsend earns her first win as a head coach of the Scarlet Raiders to improve to 1-0 on the year while Cedar Crest fell to 0-1.

The Scarlet Raiders opened their 2022-23 campaign against Cedar Crest and after falling behind 4-1 in the first five minutes, the Scarlet Raiders found their form under new head coach Stacey Townsend. Rutgers-Newark ended the first quarter tied 10-10 with the Falcons. Rutgers-Newark kept the momentum going in the second quarter and outscored Cedar Crest 22-11 to take a 32-21 lead into the half. 

Syncere Lambert and Elisha India Cross led the Scarlet Raiders in the opening stanza with 7 and 9 points, respectively. Ashley Martinez sent the  Scarlet Raiders into the locker room on a high note after hitting a buzzer-beating 3-point shot to extend their run to 9-4. In the first half, the Scarlet Raiders used their height to their advantage and scored 18 points in the paint, and out-rebounded the Falcons 23-16. 

Lambert and Ebony Odom Barnes continued playing well for the Scarlet Raiders as Lambert finished with a team-high 20 points while Odom Barnes tallied 15. Out of the break, Cedar Crest cut into the Scarlet Raiders lead, knocking it down to eight before Rutgers-Newark went on a 10-1 run to push their lead out to 20. Lourdes Marasigan was efficient from 3-point range all afternoon and finished with 12 points on 50% shooting from behind the arc. 

In the fourth, the Falcons made one final push to gain the lead, however, the Scarlet Raiders locked in on defense and held Cedar Crest to 13 points while scoring 17 of their own.

The Scarlet Raiders will square off against Rosemont tomorrow afternoon to close out the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at 2:30 pm.
