Men's Basketball Hangs on to Defeat FDU-Florham, 56-53

MADISON, NJ | Tony Godwin paced the Scarlet Raiders with 17 points as Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team hung on to win their first game of the season, 56-53, over FDU-Florham. The Scarlet Raiders moved to 1-2 while FDU-Florham dropped to 0-4.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 15-5 lead behind a Tyrone Bowens layup. A free throw by the Devils ended the Scarlet Raiders' scoring run. Godwin gave the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the half, 11, after he converted a jumper from the painted area. However, over the next two minutes, the Scarlet Raiders saw their lead dwindle to just three. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd stopped the bleeding with four minutes to go with a fast-break jumper which helped the Scarlet Raiders push their lead back out to 10 before the half.

Rutgers-Newark's offense was slowed down in the second half, as they scored just 23 points compared to 33 in the first. After staving off a comeback from FDU-Florham, the Scarlet Raiders began to see cracks in their defense as their lead fell to six with 9 minutes to go. FDU-Florham pulled within four but Bowens made sure to keep the Devils at an arms length with a layup on the offensive end. With 37 seconds remaining on the scoreboard, FDU-Florham hit a jumper to bring themselves within three. Down the stretch, the Scarlet Raiders missed their chances from the charity stripe, allowing the Devils to have one last chance to send the game into overtime. The Devils saw their last ditch ever miss the bottom of the net as the Scarlet Raiders survived.
