Men's Basketball Falls at the Buzzer to USMMA

KINGS POINT, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad went toe-to-toe with United States Merchant Marine Academy and fell by one, 80-79. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 1-3 with the loss while USMMA earned their first win to improve to 1-2.

The first half started with both teams going shot for shot as neither was able to pull away from the other. Kelvin Marshall converted two consecutive layups, and finished the game with five points, to keep the Scarlet Raiders within three. USMMA, with 11 minutes to go, stretched their lead out to 9 before Levi Holton hit a layup to cut the lead down to seven. With one minute to go Tony Godwin stole the ball and converted a layup on the offensive end to bring the Scarlet Raiders within one.

In the second half, the battle continued, however, USMMA pulled out to a strong 18-point lead. With 2:43 remaining, USMMA's offense stalled at 78 and the Scarlet Raiders took advantage. Godwin brought the Scarlet Raiders within one with a 3-point basket with 46 seconds to go before Holton converted from the painted area with 25 ticks left to put Rutgers-Newark up one. The Scarlet Raiders, however, would not walk out of the gym with the win as with one second left USMMA cashed in on a layup to give them their first win of the season.
