Men's Basketball Suffers Late-Game Stall Against Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this evening against Ramapo College. The Scarlet Raiders fell in their opening conference game, 55-52, and dropped to 1-4, 0-1 on the year while the Roadrunners improved to 3-1, 1-0.

Tony Godwin once again paced the Scarlet Raiders with 15 points while Tyrone Bowens led the team with 9 rebounds. A layup by Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd followed by a Levi Holton free throw put Rutgers-Newark up seven in the opening five minutes. After that offensive burst, the Scarlet Raiders offense stalled which opened a window for the Roadrunners which they seized by going on a 7-0 run. Rutgers-Newark battled back and by the end of the opening stanza trailed by just a pair, 28-26.

Travis Miles gave the Scarlet Raiders an electric start with a dunk out of the locker room to tie the game up at 28. He followed that up with a jumper to put Rutgers-Newark back in the drivers seat. The Scarlet Raiders held onto that lead until there was 4:48 remaining in the game where Anthony Corbo hit a shot from behind the arc to put the Roadrunner up two. Kelvin Marshall cut the lead down to one to give the Scarlet Raiders a chance to overcome their deficit, however, Rutgers-Newark was unable to cash in on their chances down the stretch as Ramapo held on for the win.
