Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Home Opener

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team had their 2022-23 home opener spoiled this afternoon when they suffered a heart-wrenching 61-58 defeat.

Sanaa Brodie had a standout performance for Rutgers-Newark, scoring a career-high 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field. She also grabbed four rebounds and tallied two steals in a valiant effort.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with both teams trading leads back and forth. The Eagles took a slim 17-16 lead into the second quarter, however, Saint Elizabeth extended their lead to four heading into halftime. The Scarlet Raiders took control in the third quarter, outscoring Saint Elizabeth 15-13 to trail by just two heading into the final frame.

Aliyah Sanchez gave Rutgers-Newark a one-point lead with 1:06 remaining but that lead wouldn't last long as the Eagles cashed in on a pair from the charity stripe to go ahead by one. Odom Barnes had a chance to put her team ahead but saw her jumper rim out. Saint Elizabeth's defense remained stout and didn't give Rutgers-Newark a chance to score as they hit another pair of free throws to push their lead out to three before the final buzzer.

Unfortunately, Rutgers-Newark struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 22-for-50 (44%) from the field and 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. These shooting woes proved costly, as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and came up just short in the end.
