Horton Tallies 18 as Rutgers-Newark Falls to William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ | A strong start by the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball squad wasn't enough to overcome their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foes, William Paterson on Wednesday night. The Pioneers took down the Scarlet Raiders 81-55 to improve to 9-4, 4-2 while the Scarlet Raiders fell to 3-9, 1-4.

Horton led the Scarlet Raiders with 18 points in the loss as Brodie followed up with 12 of her own. Pacing the team with seven rebounds was Jaielyn Alston while Elisha India Cross dished out a team-high 9 assists.

Sanaa Brodie came out strong for the Scarlet Raiders and scored eight of their opening 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting. Samiyiah Horton returned to the lineup for Rutgers-Newark and promptly found the bottom of the net to put her squad up 12-9. William Paterson quickly retaliated to take a brief lead before the Scarlet Raiders came roaring back behind two long baskets by Horton which helped Rutgers-Newark carry a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.

Rutgers-Newark's offense cooled off in the second stanza with Brodie in foul trouble. The Pioneers began to stretch the floor and established a high-paced offense which put Rutgers-Newark on their heels. Rutgers-Newark wasn't able to continue their momentum from the first quarter as they were plagued by turnovers which allowed the Pioneers to take a strong 44-28 lead into the locker room.

The offense remained cold in the third quarter for the Scarlet Raiders as William Paterson continued to add to their tally, eventually increasing their lead to 60-35. Despite the uptick in points by the Scarlet Raiders in the final chapter, it wasn't enough to overcome their deficit as they would go on to fall to their NJAC foes.
