Women's Basketball Unable to Overcome First Half Woes as They Fall to NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders women's basektball squad suffered a 78-62 loss to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rivals, New Jersey City University (NJCU). The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders down to 3-10, 1-5 while NJCU improved to 4-8, 4-3. 

Ebony Odom Barnes paced the Scarlet Raiders with 23 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor while also tallying three steals. Elisha India Cross finished with 16 points, second-highest tally on the season and led the team with six assists. 

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start and were outscored 17-8 in the first quarter. Rutgers-Newark's continued to stall in the second stanza as they recorded just five points, while NJCU further extended their with 23-point quarter. 

Head coach Stacey Townsend gave the Scarlet Raiders a powerful speech in the locker room as they came out with a 25-point quarter. Odom Barnes' run at the free-throw line helped spark the Scarlet Raiders' offense as they went on a 7-0 run. Kaiel Maynor converted a jumper with 40 seconds to go before Cross cashed in from three to send the Scarlet Raiders into the final chapter down 21. 

Another strong performance in the fourth by the Scarlet Raiders saw them post 24 points, however, their first half woe's kept them from being able to complete the comeback.
