Odom Barnes & Horton Pace #RUNWBB in Loss to Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team struggled offensively against Montclair State University and fell in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) clash, 84-39. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 3-11, 1-6 while Montclair improved to 7-7, 4-3.

Odom Barnes and Horton paced the Scarlet Raiders with 11 points each while Aliyah Sanchez led the team with seven rebounds.

Elisha India Cross and Ebony Odom Barnes produced the offense for the Scarlet Raiders in the opening quarter, with Odom Barnes finding success from inside the paint. Samiyiah Horton added a pair, however, Rutgers-Newark struggled to slow down Montclair's perimeter attack. In the second quarter of play, Rutgers-Newark offense began to heat up as they cut the lead down to four. Montclair promptly went on a 5-0 run with 6:55 to go to for the Scarlet Raiders to call a timeout to slow down Montclair's high-paced offense.

Out of the timeout, Montclair's offense continued to find the bottom of the net as they used a 20-4 run to further extend their lead. India Cross broke their scoring drought with a crafty drive to the rim to post their 22nd point of the game. The Scarlet Raiders had a pair of chances to cash in before the half but Montclair's defense made it tough for them as they went to the locker room down 44-22.

Rutgers-Newark's offense stalled coming out of the break as the Red Hawks forced the Scarlet Raiders into bad shots, which limited them to just four points in the third stanza. As the game wore on Montclair continued to cement their lead as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to unlock the Red Hawks' defense.
