Men's Basketball Drops NJAC Contest to #20 Stockton

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad battled the 20th ranked Ospreys of Stockton University this evening and fell 75-62. The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders to 1-7, 0-3 while Stockton improved to 7-1, 3-1.

Tony Godwin paced the Scarlet Raiders with 21 points while Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd added 15. Travis Miles and Jenkins-Floyd added seven rebounds each. 

For the opening 10 minutes the Ospreys and Scarlet Raiders traded points ending with a 15-15 stalemate. A two-minute scoreless streak by the Scarlet Raiders opened the door for Stockton to take the lead. The Ospreys used a 10-2 run to take an eight point lead before Godwin put the Scarlet Raiders up one with a three-point basket with 6:13 to go. As the opening half began to dwindle down, Stockton regained their form and took control and carried a 9-point lead into the locker room. 

The Scarlet Raiders' offensive struggles continued at the start of the second half as Stockton stretched their lead out to a game-high 23 points  at the 16:42 mark. Jenkins-Floyd and Godwin paired up to cash in from behind the arc to bring Rutgers-Newark within 12. Kelvin Marshall cut the deficit further down with a layup, however, Stockton remained strong and carried their double-digit lead to the finish line.

The Scarlet Raiders will travel to Camden, NJ to take on Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC contest at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 10.
