Women's Basketball Narrowly Falls to Stockton, 51-45

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball squad battled a formitable foe in Stockton University and fell 51-45. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 2-6, 0-3 while the Ospreys improved to 7-2, 2-2.

Syncere Lambert and Ebony Odom Barnes paced the Scarlet Raiders with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Odom Barnes led the team with seven rebounds and three assists. Lourdes Marasigan finished the game with eight points and 2-of-7 shooting from the floor.

Rutgers-Newark came out strong against the Osprey's and took the first quarter by a score of 16-8. Lambert put the Scarlet Raiders up 10 with 3:08 remaining in the first with a three-point basket. A pair of free-throws by Stockton cut the lead down to eight as the page turned into the second quarter.

In the second quarter the Scarlet Raiders' offense struggled to continue their success from the first stanza, scoring just seven points. However, Stockton's offense wasn't able to get off of the ground either as Rutgers-Newark held them to 12 points and took a 23-20 lead into the locker room.

Play swung the opposite direction out of the break as Stockton's offense was firing on all cylinders while the offensive woes continued for the Scarlet Raiders. Stockton took the lead with five minutes to go in the third as Rutgers-Newark went on a 6:18 scoring drought. Lambert broke that scoring drought in the fourth quarter with a free throw that aided the Scarlet Raiders' comeback attempt. Down 11 with 1:47 to go the Scarlet Raiders' offense found their groove and made one final push for the lead. However, as time dwindled, Stockton hit a pair of free-throws to keep the Scarlet Raiders at bay.
