Kumar & Au Help #7 #RUNMVB Past Thiel & #14 St. John Fisher

ROCHESTER, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark #7 ranked men's volleyball squad completed their weekend tournament in Rochester, NY with a pair of wins to extend their win streak to seven. The Scarlet Raiders defeated Thiel, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) to open the day before defeating #14 St. John Fisher, 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23). 

Match 1: #7 Rutgers-Newark (7-1) 3, Thiel (1-9) 0

Elan Dorkhman led the way for the Scarlet Raiders with 9 kills while Martin Chromulak and Eric Hollenbach added seven each. Derek Au remained on setting duties and collected 35 assists.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead with kills by Hollenbach and Chromulak. Rutgers-Newark continued to dominate Thiel as they pushed their lead out to 14-5. Thiel attempted a late comeback, however, the Scarlet Raiders held onto their lead and closed out the first set, 25-17. 

The Scarlet Raiders saw themselves fall behind in the second set before using a late 5-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. Firmly in the driver's seat, the Scarlet Raiders continued to hit their marks on the offensive side, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match. 

The closest set of the match came in the third and final with the Scarlet Raiders taking down Thiel 25-20. With the set tied at seven, Rutgers-Newark went on a 6-0 run to take the lead in the set. Towards the end of the set, the Scarlet Raiders led 20-17 before increasing their lead to 24-19 before completing their third sweep of the weekend. 

Match 2: #7 Rutgers-Newark (8-1) 3, #14 St. John Fisher (9-3) 1

Kumar remained in the zone against St. John Fisher and led the way with 16 kills. Andrew Zaleck and Daniel Quay each added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Alongside Kumar, Au passed the ball with ease and accumulated 47 assists. 

With the score knotted at 20 towards the end of the opening set, St. John Fisher ended the set on a 5-1 run to take 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders rebounded well from the first set loss and jumped out to an 11-4 lead. St. John Fisher cut the lead down to three, however, the Scarlet Raiders were able to use their momentum to complete set two and knot the match up at one. 

After going back and forth for a majority of the set Rutgers-Newark used a 5-2 run to jump in front, 22-20. St. John Fisher cut the lead down to one before Kumar tallied two straight kills followed by a kill from Zaleck to take a 2-1 lead in the set. 

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to an early lead and held that lead throughout the final set to knock off #14 St. John Fisher.
