No. 7 Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Takes a Four-Set Match Over Elizabethtown

NEWARK, NJ | No. 7 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team caged the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown this afternoon in their second Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC), 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18).

Rutgers-Newark (11-1, 2-0) hit .324 as a team and tallied 54 kills over Elizabethtown. Arvind Kumar led the team with 18 kills in the four sets and hit .225 while adding one service ace. Daniel Quay and Elan Dorkhman tallied 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Dorkhman also led the team with three service aces. Keeping rallies alive was Matt Nikishin who tallied a team-high 10 digs while Derek Au paved the way with 48 assists. 

The Scarlet Raiders jumped ahead of the Blue Jays early on in the opening set with kills by Quay and Au. Elizabethtown hung around until the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-1 run to push their lead out to seven. Quay would round out the set for the Scarlet Raiders will a kill off of a set by Au to give the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead in the match. 

After squandering the lead early in the second, the Scarlet Raiders knotted the set up at 22 before scoring three straight with kills by Kumar and Robert Long to send them into the third set up 2-0. 

In the third set, the Scarlet Raiders dropped just their seventh set of the season when the Blue Jays rallied with a 5-1 run to close out the set. 

Rutgers-Newark came out with something to prove in the fourth set as opened with a 9-4 run before using a 6-1 run later in the set to take a 21-15 lead. Andrew Zaleck gave the Scarlet Raiders a six-point lead (22-16) which led to Martin Chromulak and Kumar added kills to their ledger to close out the match.
