Kromah Lifts #RUNMBB Past Montclair in NJAC Bout

MONTCLAIR, NJ | Abe Kromah led the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball tonight with 18 points as they knocked off New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foes, Montclair, 66-63.

Rutgers-Newark (15-7, 12-4) shot 47.9% from the floor and held a 37-31 edge on the boards. The Scarlet Raiders dominated the paint against the Red Hawks, scoring 34 of their 66 points from the painted region. Quincy Rutherford and Dante Ralph added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Montclair (12-8, 9-7) received 20 points from Breeman while Eck and Callender added 14 and 13, respectively.

The Red Hawks were first on the board in tonight's contest, however, Rutherford quickly responded with a three-point basket to put the Scarlet Raiders in front. Rutgers-Newark remained in front for the remainder of the half, despite Montclair tying it up three times. Kromah scored four unanswered at the end of the half to send his team into the locker room with a four-point lead.

Both teams nearly doubled their point total from the first half with each team scoring 40+ points in the second half alone. With 11:24 remaining in the game, Montclair regained the lead with a three-point basket by Breeman. That lead wouldn't last long as Rutherford responded with one of his own to put his team back in the driver's seat.

With the lead in hand, the Scarlet Raiders kept Montclair at bay and eventually stretched their lead out to seven, their largest of the game, with 4:31 to go. The Red Hawks chipped away at the lead and with 51 seconds remaining saw themselves down just three points. The game became a free-throw shooting contest with the Scarlet Raiders coming out on top to complete the season split with Montclair.
