Rutgers-Newark Softball Splits Season Opener in South Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, SC | The Rutgers-Newark softball program split the opening doubleheader of their spring trip today when they dropped the opener to St. Joseph, 6-5 (9inn.) before taking down Stevenson, 3-2. 

Game 1: St. Joseph 6, Rutgers-Newark 5

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1) were led offensively by Megan Tomaselli who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Michelle McMillian and Jackie Lara each added a pair of hits and a combined three RBIs. Both McMillian and Lara tallied a home run in the loss. In the circle, Michelle Capizzano (0-1) hurled 101 pitches and tallied 9 strikeouts with just one walk while allowing seven hits and four earned runs in 4.2 innings. 

St. Joseph (1-0) had four players reach the double hit mark with Stoddard leading the way with two RBIs. Amato got the start in the circle and picked up eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings, however, it was Savinelli (1-0) who earned the win.

St. Joseph put up a run in the top of the first before Tomaselli leveled the playing field with an RBI single through the right side. In the third, the teams would once again match each other with one run each. McMillian put her blazing speed on display when she recorded an inside-the-park home run. 

In the top of the fourth, St. Joseph scored three runs to take control of the lead against the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark cut the lead down to just a pair when McMillian raced home after Tomaselli was thrown out at first. Down two heading into the bottom of the 7th, Lara crushed a ball over the left-center wall for a two-RBI homer to knot the game up at five.

After a stalemate in the 8th, St. Joseph scored the go ahead run in the top of the 9th to secure the win.  

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Stevenson 2

The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) evened their record with a 3-2 victory over Stevenson in game two. Tomaselli carried her momentum over from game one and put the Scarlet Raiders on the board when she crossed home plate after Lara hit an RBI single up the middle. 

In the 3rd, McMillian hit a lead-off triple before being brought home by Tomaselli. The Scarlet Raiders scored what would be their game-winning run in 6th when Madison DiGiorgio hit an RBI single to right field to score Mia Lopez
