No. 8 Rutgers-Newark Splits Virginia Tri-Match

ASHLAND, VA | No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball split their tri-match this afternoon. They started their day with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) foes, Randolph-Macon before falling to Belmont Abbey, 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-12). 

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Randolph-Macon 0

Andrew Zaleck led the Scarlet Raiders (17-2, 5-0) with 13 kills while hitting .417. Arvind Kumar and Daniel Quay added 9 and 7 kills, respectively with Derek Au tallying 30 assists. Matt Nikishin had yet another incredible defensive showing with 15 digs while Quay rose above the net for six total blocks. 

Randolph-Macon (13-6, 2-5) received six kills Jarrett Carrano while Cade Terrell paced the team with 14 assists. As a team, Randolph-Macon hit .011 while registering just one block. 

Bolstered by a 6-1 run the Scarlet Raiders took an early lead and never faltered. Later, Zaleck picked up a kill followed by a pair of service aces by Robert Long to help increase their lead to 20-11. Kumar and Eric Hollenbach each added a kill at the end of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

In the second set, Randolph-Macon jumped in front 11-6. Later in the set, Rutgers-Newark used a 7-0 run to grab hold of the lead, 21-17. After falling behind late in the set, Randolph-Macon was unable to match the intensity of the Scarlet Raiders as they fell further behind to give Rutgers-Newark a 2-0 lead.

A battle ensued in the first half of the third set, until a 7-2 run by the Scarlet Raiders burst the set open in their favor. Randolph-Macon chipped away at the lead until they trailed by just three, 22-19, but Long ended their run with a kill. Quay sealed the game for the Scarlet Raiders with a kill assisted by Au to keep the Scarlet Raiders undefeated in the CVC. 

Match 2: Belmont Abbey 3, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders (17-3) hit .105 as a team in their second match of the day. Martin Chromulak paced the team with 8 kills while Hollenbach finished with four. Au once again led the team with 16 assists while Aidan Apito and Nikishin tied for the lead with three digs each. 

Belmont Abbey (11-8) was led by Andrew Kohut who secured 9 kills while Jack Walsh led the team with 29 assists. Ethan Rehnmann and Matteo Miselli each picked up a pair of service aces. 

Rutgers-Newark and Belmont Abbey went back-and-forth for the most part of the first set until a 4-0 run by the Crusaders separated the two squads. The Scarlet Raiders bounced back with a 4-0 run of their own but were unable to get over the hump as an attacking error gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Belmont Abbey took control of the second set late, using a 6-2 run to take a 23-17 lead before eventually picking up the win. They carried that momentum over into the third set where they had their strongest offensive performance of the match, by hitting .714 as a team to win the set 25-12.
