No. 7 #RUNMVB Ends Their Regular Season With a Sweep of EMU

NEWARK, NJ | No. 7 Rutgers University-Newark kept their momentum from last night's colossal win going this afternoon when they swept Eastern Mennonite, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-9) in the final regular-season Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match. The Scarlet Raiders will now take the No. 1 seed into the CVC Tournament with hosting duties that begin on Tuesday, April 5 with the CVC Quarterfinals followed by the CVC Semifinal and Finals which take place at The Golden Dome on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9.

It was senior day for the Scarlet Raiders and Antonio Rocchio, Elan Dorkhman, Arvind Kumar, and Robert Long were all honored before the match this afternoon. 

The Scarlet Raiders (20-3, 8-0) hit .303 as a team with Kumar leading the team with 10 kills. Elan Dorkhman finished with eight while Long tallied three assists and a team-high seven digs. Rocchio paced the squad with 26 assists and three total blocks. Martin Chromulak added six kills and hit a team-high .500 for the match.

Eastern Mennonite (2-15, 1-7) was led by Nate McGhee's 9 kills and Tyler Oaks 13 assists. At the net, Josh White picked up two block assists. 

Rutgers-Newark opened the match with a bang, using a 7-2 run helmed by four service aces and three kills all split between Andrew Zaleck, Kumar and Eric Hollenbach. The Royals cut the lead down to four midway through the opening set, however, the Scarlet Raiders responded with an 8-3 run that put the set out of reach for Eastern Mennonite. 

The second set went back-and-forth for the majority as neither team was able to pull away from the other. Rutgers-Newark tried to extend their lead with a 4-0 run but Eastern Mennonite answered with a 4-0 run of their own to make it a one-point set. With the set tied at 22, Rutgers Newark earned two kills by Kumar and an attacking error by the Royals to seal set two and go up 2-0 in the match. 

The Scarlet Raiders saved their best set of the afternoon for last. As a team, they hit .500 and won 25-9. With a 12-6 lead, Chromulak sparked a 13-3 run for Rutgers-Newark that they rode to the end to complete the sweep of the Royals.
