Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Outlasts Marymount to Advance to CVC Championship

NEWARK, NJ | Top-seeded Rutgers University-Newark defended their home court this afternoon against #4 Marymount in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Semifinal, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21).

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders (21-3) hit .219 and recorded 32 kills while holding Marymount to .195 on the day. Andrew Zaleck finished with 14 kills and a .207 hit percentage while Derke Au tallied 31 assists. Eric Hollenbach and Arvind Kumar added six and five kills, respectively. At the net, Hollenbach paced the squad with five total blocks.

Marymount (23-8) used a plethora of players and it was Raymond Tarasi who led the way with eight kills on 17 attacks. Sava Topich topped the team with 25 assists and Jason Perkins tallied a team-high two blocks.

In the opening stanza, it was a back-and-forth affair until the Scarlet Raiders ripped the set open with a 6-1 run. With an 18-13 lead in hand, Rutgers-Newark inched towards the finish line until the Saints went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to one. Zaleck ended Marymount's run with a kill, however, Marymount hung around and added two more to their tally to keep it a one-point set. Robert Long and Kumar responded with a kill each to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead.

The second set played out similarly to the first with neither team grabbing hold of the lead until Rutgers-Newark did so towards the end of the set. Down 21-19, Zaleck bookended an attacking error by Marymount to propel his team in front, 22-21. A service error leveled the playing field but the Scarlet Raiders were quick to respond with a pair of kills by Daniel Quay to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

To claim the first spot in the CVC Championship, Rutgers-Newark took their 19-15 lead in the third set and ran to a 25-21 victory for their first chance at the CVC Championship since 2015.
