Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Claims First CVC Championship Since 2015

NCAA Selection Show (Monday - 10am)

NEWARK, NJ
| For the second time in program history, and first since 2015, the No. 5 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team was crowned Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Champions. The Scarlet Raiders took down Southern Virginia, 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-17).

The tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Andrew Zaleck, collected a match-high 18 kills with a hitting percentage of .233 while Arvind Kumar and Daniel Quay added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. The Scarlet Raiders (22-3) hit .264 as a team and had a set-high 17 kills in the opening set. Derek Au played outstanding and accumulated 48 assists and four total blocks. Defensively Matt Nikishin and Robert Long added 8 and 7 digs, respectively. Long was effective on the offensive side, using 16 attacks to record eight kills when his team needed them most.

For Southern Virginia (19-4) it was Nahuel Recabarren who paced the team with 15 kills and seven total blocks while Paul Candland added 10 kills of his own.  Kaipo Tagaloa tallied 26 assists while Tanner Durkin picked up four blocks.

The Scarlet Raiders had their most prolific set, in terms of kills, to open the match, as they collected 17 to win 25-22. Most of the set was a back-and-forth affair, however, it was Rutgers-Newark who was able to narrowly stay out in front. Southern Virginia cut the lead down to two, 23-21 before Long and Quay closed out the set with a kill each.

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark hit .423 as a team and recorded 13 kills as they recorded their largest margin of victory, 25-17, over the Knights. Rutgers-Newark, up just a pair, used a 5-0 run to push their lead out to 18-11 over the Knights. To end the set, the teams traded points until a pair of errors by Southern Virginia gave the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 lead in the match.

Southern Virginia started off hot in set three and caused Rutgers-Newark to call an early timeout to regroup. The timeout worked as the Scarlet Raiders eventually took a 13-9 lead. Southern Virginia, however, rallied and regained the lead which they rode to a third set win.

Rutgers-Newark came out strong in the fourth set and used a pair of mini runs to take a 13-10 lead. Down the stretch, up 19-16, Kumar helped spark the Scarlet Raiders' offense with a pair of kills to allow Rutgers-Newark to win the match on a 7-1 run.

The Scarlet Raiders will now wait to see who they will take on in the NCAA Tournament which opens play on Friday, April 15.
