No. 5 Rutgers-Newark Advances to NCAA Quarterfinal With 3-0 Win Over Baruch

NEWARK, NJ | Arvind Kumar led the Scarlet Raiders past Baruch in the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament First Round this afternoon at The Golden Dome, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19).

Kumar finished the match with a team-high 14 kills for the Scarlet Raiders (23-3) while Daniel Quay and Eric Hollenbach added 9 and 7, respectively. Derek Au and Justin Tuohy split setting duties with 26 and 15.

Baruch's (13-12) season came to a close this afternoon as they were held to .227 hitting as a team. Akil Vaughn, Jack Centeno, and Haoxin Hu each tallied a team-high six kills in the loss. Stallone Shankar led the team with 20 assists.

Baruch jumped in front of the Scarlet Raiders in the first set, 3-1, however, Rutgers-Newark quickly responded with a 5-0 run to regain control of the set. From there, the Scarlet Raiders kept Baruch at bay as they closed out the set with three straight points to put them up 1-0 in the match. 

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark took an early lead but Baruch leveled the score before kills by Kumar, and Andrew Zaleck placed Rutgers-Newark in the lead. Au recorded an ace to put Rutgers-Newark up 13-7 before the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-1 run to push their lead out to 20-11. Once again, Rutgers-Newark closed out the set on a scoring run led by Hollenbach. 

The Scarlet Raiders continued to stay hot in the third set and hit .542 as a squad. After going back and forth most of the match, Rutgers-Newark used a 6-1 run to extend their lead over the Bearcats. Baruch came within four before Rutgers-Newark shut the door with a Kumar kill.
