NEWARK, NJ | The No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark Scarlet Raiders men's volleyball team extended their win streak to three tonight after sweeping Arcadia, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-21).
Rutgers-Newark (14-2) was led by Andrew Zaleck who tallied a team-high 18 kills while Arvind Kumar added 14. Daniel Quay was highly efficient at the net, hitting .636 for the match and adding four blocks. Matt Nikishin recorded his second-highest dig tally of the year with 14 and Derek Au tossed up 42 assists.Â
Arcadia (7-13) received five kills from Owen Heft and Kevin Abraham while Anthony Devantier paced the squad with seven assists.Â
In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders struggled offensively early on against the Knights and after falling behind 12-8 a timeout was called to try and regroup. The timeout worked out for the Scarlet Raiders as they rallied back to within one of the Knights, forcing them to call a timeout of their own. Au aided the Scarlet Raiders while on serve, forcing Arcadia to fall behind 20-19. Arcadia would call their second timeout of the set after Kumar secured his sixth kill of the set to tie it up at 23. Quay and Au collected a block before an attacking error by Arcadia put the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0.Â
The Scarlet Raiders and Knights jockeyed back-and-forth for the entirety of the second set as neither team was able to grab hold of the lead. Arcadia used a block and benefitted from an attacking error to jump into the lead, 18-16. Zaleck picked up back-to-back kills to put the Scarlet Raiders in front late in the second set, 23-22. Out of the Arcadia timeout, Quay denied Zimmerman to take a 24-22 lead. Quay came up big for the Scarlet Raiders once more as a block gave them the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.Â
Rutgers-Newark began to take hold of the third set midway through when they jumped out to a 16-12 lead which forced Arcadia to call a timeout. The timeout allowed the Knights to cut the lead down, but the Scarlet Raiders quickly regained momentum and took a 22-18 lead. Kumar set the Scarlet Raiders up for match point with a service ace, however, Arcadia brought themselves within three. A service error by Arcadia gave the match to the Scarlet Raiders as they completed the sweep of the Knights.Â
