On the mound, Daniel Reardon (2-1) hurled six innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits.

The Scarlet Raiders were first on the scoreboard when Suleski doubled to left field to score both Eric Recchia and Robert Gonzalez who reached on a single and a walk, respectively.

Montclair answered with a run in the top of the 3rd to cut their deficit in half. The Red Hawks then took the lead in the top of the 5th when they plated three runs. Joe Norton used a sacrifice fly to score a run before Peter Cosentino hit a 2 RBI homer over the left field wall to push their lead out to 4-2. In the 6th, Montclair added another tally to their total to increase their lead to 5-2.

After five scoreless innings, the Scarlet Raiders doubled their total with two runs in the 7th. Rypkema started the inning with a single through the right side before with the bases loaded, Armando Alvarez would be walked to score a run. Suleski added another RBI the easy way when he was hit by a pitch to score Lisandro Ulerio.

Rutgers-Newark had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th but their bats went cold as Montclair closed out the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Montclair 9, Rutgers-Newark 8

Rutgers-Newark (10-8, 0-2) collected 13 hits, four of which came from Lisandro Ulerio.
