#RUNWVB Offense Stalls Against NJCU in NJAC Showdown

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this evening against New Jersey City University (NJCU) and fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-17). With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 0-3, 0-1 on the year while NJCU improved to 3-2, 1-0.

The opening set of the first NJAC clash of the season between these NJAC rivals saw NJCU take set one with a commanding 25-13 scoreline. Alexa Rivera hit a solid .500 in the opening stanza, however, the Gothic Knights proved to be too much as they would grab hold of the lead and cruise to the win to jump ahead in the match, 1-0.

Rutgers-Newark and the Gothic Knights sparred early on in the second set, going back and forth, but once again, NJCU was able to go on a long run to grab hold of the set. After registering five kills in the first set, Rivera was held to one in the second as the Scarlet Raiders struggled to get their offense in sync. The Gothic Knights would go on to take a 25-11 win in the second set to go up 2-0 in the match.

It was much of the same in the third set as NJCU jumped out to an early lead and hung on until the end. The Scarlet Raiders tried to claw their way back into the match, however, their NJAC rivals were too strong as they successfully defended against any attack.
