Moreno & Catania Score But Fall to NYU, 4-2

NEWARK, NJ | A goal from Pablo Moreno and Franco Catania wasn't enough as Rutgers-Newark dropped a non-conference match at Frederick Douglass Field this evening, 4-2, to New York University (NYU). The loss drops Rutgers-Newark to 2-3-2 while NYU improved to 3-2-1.

The Scarlet Raiders came out quick and put a ton of pressure on Luca Mancuso tallying two shots within the first two minutes. The visiting Violets had their opportunities in the first 15 minutes, however, none of them threatened Christian Andrach, keeping the game level at 0. With 17 minutes left in the first Jonah Dias had his shot bounce off of the crossbar, nearly putting the Scarlet Raiders ahead.

Rutgers-Newark would break through moments later when Esteban Hidalgo was fouled on top of the 18-yard box. Erick Morales hit a low driven ball to the far post which was deflected back into the box where Pablo Moreno slammed it home for his first collegiate goal. 10 minutes after the Scarlet Raiders took the lead, NYU knotted it up when Bryce Lexow dribbled behind the defensive unit to sneak one past Andrach. The Violets struck while the iron was hot as just three minutes later they struck again when Panero-Ren was set free in the box to put his team up 2-1.

Catania, as he's known for doing, knotted the game up at two when he converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute. The Violets would regain the lead in the 60th minute before adding another marker to take a 4-2 lead at Frederick Douglass Field.

The Scarlet Raiders had a chance with 59 seconds remaining to cut the lead down to one, however, Catania had his penalty kick blocked to keep the score at 4-2.
