Career-Highs by Santos Not Enough to Lift #RUNWVB Past Brooklyn

NEWARK, NJ | Alexa Rivera tallied 13 kills in the 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20, 25-18) loss to Brooklyn College at The Golden Dome on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 0-6 while Brooklyn improves to 5-4.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the opening set and tallied 14 kills on 20 attacks with just one error to hit .650. The high percentage hitting didn't push the Scarlet Raiders away as they hung with their opponents keeping it within one after a 4-0 run. Brooklyn responded with a 5-1 run to push their lead out to 13-9. After coming within one, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to replicate that run as Brooklyn took the opening set 25-18.

Rutgers-Newark picked up their second set win of the season in the second set, taking down the Bulldogs, 25-20. Kaiel Maynor and a pair of kills by Rivera helped push the Scarlet Raiders in front before the Bulldogs responded with a 11-1 run. Lead by five service aces from Angie Santos, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 13-1 run to propel them into the lead where they were able to knot the match up at one. Santos finished the game with eight aces while adding 23 assists, both career-highs.

In the third and fourth sets, the Scarlet Raiders had their offense stymied as they tallied just 11 kills in the final two sets as Brooklyn's defense made it hard to find openings. In the fourth set, the Scarlet Raiders made a push to steal it and take it to five sets, however, their comeback was cut short after a kill by Chidera Mwaghanata.
