Catania's Brace Lifts #RUNMSOC Past Stockton

NEWARK, NJ | Franco Catania continued his torrid goal-scoring streak this evening with a brace in a 3-1 win over Stockton University in their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout of the season. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 4-3-2, 1-0, while Stockton dropped to 7-2-1, 0-1.

13 minutes into the game, Franco Catania unleashed a curling shot from 23 yards out that forced Liam Brett to make a highlight save to keep the Scarlet Raiders off of the scoreboard. The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on and that led to a Jonah Dias free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Dias, always a threat despite playing center back, hit a low shot off of the ground, however, Brett was ready for it and made the save.

The Scarlet Raiders broke through in the 31st minute when Catania scored, what could be, the goal of the year. Pablo Moreno dribbled along the right side and dropped the ball off to Catania who hit a left-footed curling shot into the top left corner. Michael Tavares almost doubled the Scarlet Raiders' lead but his shot was parried away by Brett.

At the half, the Scarlet Raiders held a healthy 10-2 edge in shots with corner kicks level at two each.

The aforementioned Dias, pounded home his fourth goal of the season when Marco Menacho crossed the ball into the back post for a header goal. For a moment, it seemed the Scarlet Raiders increased their lead to 3-0 just moments after scoring their second goal, however, Aslan Kat's goal was deemed offside.

Rutgers-Newark eventually got their third tally when the Scarlet Raiders' and NJAC's leading goal scorer, Catania came streaking down the right side and scored near post, beating Brett. Stockton scored their first goal of the game in the 76th minute after a foul inside the box gave Stockton a penalty kick. Mike McKeown stepped up to the spot and powered it past Christian Andrach to cut the lead down to 3-1.

Stockton was unable to break through once more as the Scarlet Raiders earned their first NJAC victory of the season.
