Late Surge Unable to Push #RUNMSOC to Draw Against Stevens, 2-1

Box Score NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer squad dropped a non-conference bout, 2-1, against Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field. With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders drop to 1-2 while Stevens improves to 2-0-1.

The tale of the battle between the Ducks and the Scarlet Raiders was one of caution as both teams used the opening stanza to figure each other out. Stevens bested the Scarlet Raiders in the shot category, however, Christian Andrach was ready for the task. Andrach put his body on the line for several saves to blank the Ducks in the first half.

Rutgers-Newark did threaten in the first but was unable to find the back of the net on their pair of shots. The two skillful sides would head into the half with a 0-0 scoreline.

After the break, the Scarlet Raiders ramped up their offense and came out strong, putting pressure on Stevens' back line. Stevens, however, would absorb the attacks and use a counterattack to find the back of the net for their first of the game. Adam Silva was able to hit one just out of the reach of Andrach to put the Ducks up 1-0. After more back-and-forth, the Ducks capitalized on a corner kick to double their lead over the Scarlet Raiders.

With 21 minutes remaining, Justin Cross stopped two golden opportunities for the Scarlet Raiders. A point-blank header in the box followed by a glorious through ball by Juwan Ash to Ryan Caruso. Caruso broke through the back line but was unable to sneak it past Cross to put the Scarlet Raiders on the board. Brandon Castro almost put the Scarlet Raiders on the board shortly after entering the game, however, Cross was up to the task and stonewalled Castro's shot.

Reigning NJAC Player of the Week, Franco Catania created his own opportunity when he dribbled by a Ducks defender and tried to beat Cross far post but Cross put a foot on it to keep it out of the net. The constant pressure paid dividends in the 80th minute when Castro found Caruso in the box who was able to sidestep a defender and find the side netting, far post to cut the lead in half.

With time dwindling down, the Scarlet Raiders kept sending wave after wave of attacks but were unable to break through again as the time ran out on the comeback attempt.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday when they head to St. Mary's City, MD to take part in the St. Mary's Classic.
