Men's Basketball Loses Close Bout to Rowan, 76-66

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bout against Rowan University on Saturday night, 76-66, at The Golden Dome. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 4-12, 2-7 while Rowan improved to 13-3, 9-0.

Tony Godwin led the Scarlet Raiders with 17 points while Levi Holton followed up with 16 on the night. Travis Miles cleaned the glass to the tune of a team-high eight rebounds.

Rutgers-Newark took a 7-4 lead early in the contest behind a jumper by Godwin. Rowan battled back to take the lead with 11:56 to go and used that momentum to keep the Scarlet Raiders at arms length for the remainder of the half. Rowan pushed their lead out to as much as 11, however, they would only take a 10-point lead into the half after Russell Ayala went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe.

It took six minutes into the second half for Rutgers-Newark to cut the lead down to six after Rowan extended their lead to as much as 12. With 11:19 remaining in the game, Tyron Bowens got the crowd on their feet with an electric dunk to bring the Scarlet Raiders within four. Rowan promptly responded with a three to stop their opponents from gaining any momentum. Ja'Zere Noel eventually gave Rowan a 15-point buffer before Rutgers-Newark sliced it down to eight with 2:51 to go. The Scarlet Raiders and the Profs would swap free throws as time dwindled away, limiting Rutgers-Newark's chances to complete the comeback.
