Horton Tallies Season-High 25 in Loss to Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball squad suffered their 10th straight loss of the season when they dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to the Red Hawks of Montclair State University, 84-65. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 3-16, 1-11 while the Red Hawks improved to 10-9, 7-5.

Samiyah Horton led the Scarlet Raiders with a season-high 25 points in the loss while also pacing the team with five assists and four steals. Syncere Lambert added 11 points while Ebony Odom Barnes finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. 

Nickie Carter paced the Red Hawks with a game-high 26 points, going 13-for-13 from the free-throw line. Olivia Vero led the team with 9 rebounds and six blocks. 

Montclair came out strong and set the Scarlet Raiders back 26-8 in the opening quarter on 60% shooting from the floor. Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring Montclair 16-13 to gain some ground on the Red Hawks. Horton scored 16 of her 25 points in the first half of the game to keep the Scarlet Raiders within reach of the Red Hawks.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders' offense remained in form, following up on their impressive second quarter. Rutgers-Newark improved upon their point total each quarter and after scoring 16 in the second raised the bar to 18. Just as the Scarlet Raiders' offense got going, Montclair's was able to keep up as they scored 19 before matching their point total from the first quarter to keep Rutgers-Newark from overcoming their earlier deficit.
