Men's Basketball Falls in Home Opener to William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team was stifled in their home opener against William Paterson on Wednesday night when they fell 82-62 to the Pioneers at The Golden Dome. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 3-9, 1-4 while the Pioneers improved to 8-5, 2-4.

Reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd paced the Scarlet Raiders with 13 points and three assists while Tony Godwin added 11 on 4-for-9 shooting from the floor. Jordan Salisbury pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds in the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind early in tonight's NJAC contest against the Pioneers, however, a late 11-2 run brought them within four with 3:25 to go. The Pioneers regained their stride with hot shooting from behind the arc, however, Russell Ayala cashed in on a corner three before Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd wiggled his way to the hoop for a three-point play. As time dwindled towards zero before the half, the Scarlet Raiders saw momentum swing in their direction to help them cut the lead down to just four before they went to the locker room.

Rutgers-Newark came out of the break with the same enthusiasm as they left the first half and knotted the game up at 43 before Travis Miles hit a reverse layup to give the Scarlet Raiders the lead. After falling behind by one, Miles, rose above the rim for a posterizing dunk to put Rutgers-Newark back in front. Tony Godwin continued to find success from behind the arc as he sunk his third three of the game with 13:50 to go. The offensive fire would diminish as the half wore on, allowing William Paterson to pull farther ahead. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to ignite the engines again as William Paterson sealed up the win.
