Jenkins-Floyd's Late Pair of Free-Throws Lift Rutgers-Newark Past NJCU, 55-53

NEWARK, NJ | NJAC Rookie of the Week Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd secured a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over rivals New Jersey City University (NJCU) with a pair of conversions from the charity stripe with two seconds to go. The 55-53 win over NJCU improved Rutgers-Newark 4-9, 2-4 while the Gothic Knights dropped to 7-7, 2-5.

Levi Holton and Tony Godwin paced the Scarlet Raiders with 11 points each while Holton led the way with seven rebounds and three assists. Tyrone Bowens and Jenkins-Floyd added 10 points each.

Through the opening eight minutes of the game, Rutgers-Newark held an eight point lead (11-2) after a quick start behind Jenkins-Floyd. Paired up with their signature tough defense, the Gothic Knights struggled early on. However, that wouldn't remain for the entire first half as NJCU capitalized on a six minute scoreless streak by the Scarlet Raiders to put them in front, 17-11. Five straight free-throws, as the first half dwindled away, sent the Scarlet Raiders, down just one, into the locker room.

Bowens put his squad back in front with a layup to open the second half and followed that up with a jumper. The Gothic Knights eventually swung momentum into their direction and grabbed hold of the lead, pushing it out to as much as eight. Rutgers-Newark chipped away at the lead and with one minute to go trailed by one after Godwin converted a layup. With a turnover by each team in the final seconds the game was still open until Jenkins-Floyd went to the charity stripe, down one, with two seconds to go.

Jenkins-Floyd hit the first to knot the game up and then hit the go-ahead basket. Levi Holton went to the line as time expired and hit one of two to give the Scarlet Raiders the two-point win.
