Haggerty Scores in 5-1 Loss to #11 Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer squad suffered a 5-1 loss to #11 Montclair State University on Wednesday evening at Frederick Douglass Field. 

Rutgers-Newark (5-9, 1-4) struggled to get their offense going against their ranked foes as they were held to just 6 shots on the night. Montclair (9-1-2, 3-0-2) exploited the Scarlet Raiders' defense and tallied 21 shots. 

The Red Hawks' first goal came in the 15th minute of the first half. Kelly Fitzgerald launched a high ball over the defensive line of Rutgers-Newark and onto the foot of Aileen Cahill. Montclair then collected three goals in five minutes to open the gap between the two squads. With the first half coming to a close, the Red Hawks found the back of the net once more to go into halftime with a 5-0 lead. 

With 30 minutes remaining in the second half, Tamia Howell broke free in the box and was taken down, awarding Rutgers-Newark with a penalty kick. Riley Haggerty stepped up to the spot and confidently slotted the shot into the bottom right corner to put the first marker on the scoreboard for the Scarlet Raiders. The Scarlet Raiders locked down their defense and prevented any goals from Montclair, however, they were able to muster just one goal in the loss.
