Women's Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Bout to USMMA

KING'S POINT, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad suffered its fourth-straight loss this afternoon to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-20).

Rutgers-Newark (9-9) hit .055 as a team and was led by Kaiel Maynor's eight kills and Elvin Karakaya's 13 digs. Angelyse Orellana once again led Rutgers-Newark with 15 assists while Shayla Moody and Mia Espinoza each added two blocks. USMMA (10-7) was led by Meredith Buchanan's match-high 18 kills.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start, scoring just 10 points in the opening stanza. Rutgers-Newark trailed by two, 6-4 before USMMA unleashed a 7-1 run to extend their lead. USMMA strung together a few more runs to cruise to a victory in the first set of the game.

Karakaya brought the Scarlet Raiders within four early in the second set, however, USMMA once again stretched their lead behind a 6-1 run. Down by 9, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to make the comeback as they fell behind 2-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark had its highest point total of the match in the third set and had an early lead behind kills from Maynor and Moody. USMMA would respond with another run to put them out of the reach of the Scarlet Raiders.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, October 17 when they host William Paterson.
