Women's Volleyball Unable to Overcome Strong Play by William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-10) to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponents, William Paterson this evening at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (9-10, 1-4) tallied 16 kills as a team and was led by Elvin Karakaya's five. Angelyse Orellana led the way with 12 assists while Maryann Ijeh recorded three blocks. William Paterson (18-4, 3-2) hit .322 as a team and were led by Cecilia Miller's match-high 12 kills.

The Scarlet Raiders hung around with the Pioneers early in the opening stanza, going back and forth until the score was knotted at four apiece. William Paterson responded with a 13-2 run which broke open the set and put them in the driver's seat. With the lead, the Pioneers prevented any rally by the Scarlet Raiders to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, William Paterson came out strong and used a 6-1 run to separate themselves from Rutgers-Newark. Anjali Maragh ended the run with a kill and was followed by a Mia Espinoza kill to bring the Scarlet Raiders within four. A pair of kills by Elvin Karakaya kept Rutgers-Newark within reach of the Pioneers, however, they were unable to string together enough points to erase the deficit as William Paterson moved to 2-0 in the match.

William Paterson jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the third set and despite a pair of attacking errors by the Pioneers, the Scarlet Raiders were not able to overcome the early deficit as they'd fall in the third set, 25-10.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, October 21 for a tri-match in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
