Top-Seeded Stockton Too Much For Women's Volleyball to Handle

GALLOWAY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad battled top-seeded Stockton University tonight on the road and fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-13).

Rutgers-Newark (9-11, 1-5) was led by Mia Espinoza's four kills and Angelyse Orellana's four assists. Defensively, Elvin Karakaya paced the team with eight digs. Stockton (16-8, 6-0) hit .390 as a team and picked up 10 kills from Camille De La Torre.

The Ospreys took control of the opening set immediately and used a 12-0 run to cruise to a 1-0 lead in the match. Rutgers-Newark had its best hitting percentage of the night in the second set, hitting .150 as a team and tallying seven kills. Once again Stockton jumped out to a lead, however, this time the Scarlet Raiders responded and cut the deficit down to just five behind kills from Espinoza and Karakaya. Karakaya got the offense moving once more but the Ospreys closed out the set with a kill and an ace to go up 2-0 in the match.

Stockton jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third and final set but the Scarlet Raiders cut it down to just two as they benefited from three errors by Stockton. The Ospreys used a 7-2 run to expand their lead and keep the Scarlet Raiders from gaining any momentum in the set as they would complete the sweep to remain undefeated in the NJAC.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, October 21 for the King's College tri-match.
