Espinoza Records Career-High in Tri-Match Loss

WILKES BARRE, PA | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses this afternoon against King's College and Albright as part of the King's College tri-match.

Match 1: King's 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-14)

Rutgers-Newark (9-12) was led by Maryann Ijeh and Mia Espinoza at the net as they each tallied six kills in the match. Defensively, Espinoza tallied a career-high six blocks in the loss while Elvin Karakaya and Kaiel Maynor added six digs each. King's College (14-8) hit .278 as a team and tallied 38 kills.

The Scarlet Raiders and Monarchs were knotted at two early in the opening set, however, King's College used an 11-2 run to extend their lead over Rutgers-Newark. The Scarlet Raiders couldn't get their offense going as they would fall behind 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind an ace from Espinoza. King's wouldn't stay down for long as they went on a 15-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Once again in the third set, King's College used a large run to separate themselves from Rutgers-Newark and cruised to a 3-0 win in the match.

Match 2: Albright 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-15, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21)

Rutgers-Newark (9-13) hit .133 as a team and were led offensively by Maynor and Karakaya's eight kills. Angelyse Orellana paced the Scarlet Raiders with 31 assists while Aliyah Sanchez added two service aces. Albright (14-8) hit .308 as a team and picked up 16 kills from Sophie Hampton.

Maryann Ijeh brought the Scarlet Raiders within one to begin the second match of the day, but Albright stretched its lead over the Scarlet Raiders with a 7-2 run. Rutgers-Newark took advantage of a pair of errors by Albright to cut the deficit down to five but were unable to complete the comeback as they would fall behind 1-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark got its offense moving in the second set of the match as they used a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Espinoza fought off the Albright comeback attempt with back-to-back kills to keep the Scarlet Raiders in the lead to knot the match up at one.

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to keep the momentum in their favor in the third set as their offense was stymied as they mustered just 13 points. With their backs against the wall, Rutgers-Newark put up a fight in the fourth set but was unable to rekindle the fire from the second set.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, October 24 when they host Montclair State University for senior night.
