Women's Volleyball Senior Night Spoiled by Montclair, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | Kaiel Maynor and Varronika Siryon were honored before the Scarlet Raiders' final home match of the season this evening against Montclair State University. The Red Hawks spoiled Rutgers-Newark's senior night with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-16) win at The Golden Dome on Tuesday night.

Rutgers-Newark (9-14, 1-6) hit .085 as a team with Maynor leading the team with seven kills on 29 attacks. Karakaya paced the team with 11 digs while Angelyse Orellana added a team-high 16 assists. Montclair (13-12, 3-5) hit .268 as a team and Rachel Curran secured a match-high 11 kills.

After a back-and-forth affair between the Scarlet Raiders and the Red Hawks in the early part of the opening set, Rutgers-Newark inched ahead thanks to a 7-2 run capped by an Elvin Karakaya service ace. With the lead, Kaiel Maynor and Mia Espinoza further extended their lead and eventually put Rutgers-Newark ahead 17-9. Montclair, however, would claw their way back into the set and with the Scarlet Raiders on set point, would knot it up at 24. With momentum on the side of Montclair, the Red Hawks would complete the comeback to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Red Hawks remained hot in the second set and pulled away from the Scarlet Raiders using an 8-3 run. Maynor stopped the bleeding with a kill to bring her team back into the scoring column, however, Rutgers-Newark was unable to keep it going as Montclair took the point right back. Maryann Ijeh gave the Scarlet Raiders life with a pair of kills until Montclair slammed the door shut to go up 2-0 in the match.

Once again the set opened competitively with both teams going back and forth on the scoreboard. The Scarlet Raiders saw the gap grow between them and the Red Hawks but Rutgers-Newark battled back and came within two points of Montclair. The Scarlet Raiders' offense stalled as Montclair found its groove and came within five points of securing the match before Rutgers-Newark called a timeout. The timeout wasn't enough to cool off the Red Hawks as they would close out the match to complete the sweep of the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, October 31 when they take on Ramapo College at 7:00 p.m.
