Valencia's Brace Lifts Women's Soccer Past Kean, 2-1

NEWARK, NJ | Mariana Valencia scored a brace in a 2-1 win over Kean University on senior night in a must-win game for the Scarlet Raiders. Before the game, the Scarlet Raiders honored its seven seniors, Karla Valencia, Carina Afonso, Kayla Moncada, Julia Iglesia, Riley Haggerty, Leila Ettayebi, and Katie McLaughlin

Rutgers-Newark (7-10, 3-5) tallied 13(5) shots in the win with Ettayebi, Julia Nephew, and Valencia recording three each. Katie McLaughlin made four saves while Abigail Wing made three. Kean (7-10, 3-5) recorded 15(5) shots in the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders went into tonight's game with control of their destiny as they battled against Kean to keep the postseason hopes alive. With the win, the Scarlet Raiders will now take on New Jersey City University for a spot in the NJAC Playoffs on Wednesday.

Rutgers-Newark opened the scoring ledger in the 24th minute when Ettayebi calmly slotted a through ball to Valencia who curled her shot around Wing to take a 1-0 lead over the Cougars. Both offenses slowed down after that opening goal as neither team wanted to leave its defense open to a potential counterattack.

The Cougars broke through five minutes into the second half when a cross was sent in and headed back into the melting pot by Kiera Quinn. Kayley Brooks would find herself on the receiving end of that pass where her shot beat McLaughlin to the back of the net. The game would not remain deadlocked for long as Valencia took a pass from her sister, Viviana Valencia, and smashed it into the net for what would be the game-winning goal. Down by a goal and their season on the line, Kean pushed numbers forward and tallied seven shots in the final 15 minutes. McLaughlin was up for the task as she made three saves to give the Scarlet Raiders the three points they needed.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, October 25 when they head to Jersey City to take on New Jersey City University in the NJAC regular-season finale.
