Women's Soccer Season Comes to a Close with 3-1 Loss to NJCU

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer season came to a close this afternoon in a must-win game against New Jersey City University after they fell 3-1 on foreign soil. The loss to NJCU is Rutgers-Newark's first loss to the Gothic Knights since a 2-1 defeat in extra time in 2016.

Rutgers-Newark (7-11, 3-6) took 18 shots in the loss putting eight on frame. Mariana Valencia paced the Scarlet Raiders with four shots while Katie McLaughlin made five saves. New Jersey City University (7-6-4, 3-3-3) used 20 shots to score three goals and claim their position in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament.

Mariana Valencia had a chance early in the first half to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead but had the ball taken away from her, nullifying the promising attack. NJCU then capitalized on a corner kick as the ball bounced around in the box and was eventually hit into the back of the net by Becky Lopez. Tamia Howell tried to give the Scarlet Raiders life before the break, however, her shot was stonewalled as NJCU took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Julia Nephew got in on the shooting action when she sent a shot toward goal but was denied. NJCU doubled its tally in the 63rd minute when Amanda Papamanolis found the back of the net. Rutgers-Newark cut the deficit down to one after Camila Howard converted a penalty kick. The Scarlet Raiders committed more players forward which opened them up defensively and that allowed NJCU to increase their tally to three. The Scarlet Raiders rifled off three more shots in the waning moments but were unable to find the goals they needed to punch their ticket to the NJAC Tournament.
