Women's Volleyball Stumbles Against Rowan, 3-0

GLASSBORO, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match to Rowan this evening, 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-13).

Rutgers-Newark (9-6, 1-2) was led by Maynor's 9 kills and Orellana's 15 assists. Rowan (5-11, 2-2) picked up a match-high 16 kills from Jena Kaul.

Angelyse Orellana gave the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 lead to start the match with a pair of aces, however, Rowan responded with an 8-1 run to leap into the lead. Rutgers-Newark tried to spark its offense with a 3-0 run but the Profs ended that and pushed their lead out to 19-9. The Scarlet Raiders' offense stalled at 13 as Rowan secured five unanswered points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Kaiel Maynor cut the lead in half with a kill before Rowan responded with a 4-0 run in the second set. The Profs' offense slowed near the end of the set which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to put forth a comeback attempt that would ultimately come up short.

In the third set, the Scarlet Raiders kept it close early on, playing out to a 10-10 tie behind kills from Elvin Karakaya and Mia Espinoza. The Profs, however, once again blew the set up with an 8-1 run that set the Scarlet Raiders back. Rutgers-Newark was unable to find its earlier success as Rowan completed the sweep.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday, October 5 when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Brooklyn College.
