Women's Volleyball Unable to Cage Bulldogs, 3-1

BROOKLYN, NY | Kaiel Maynor led the Scarlet Raiders with 13 kills but was unable to take down the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College on Thursday evening, 3-1 (25-14, 25-11, 25-21, 25-23).

Rutgers-Newark (9-7) hit .070 as a squad and tallied 32 kills on the night. Angelyse Orellana secured her second-highest assist tally of the season with 29 in the loss while Mia Espinoza added four blocks on the night. Brooklyn (7-8) tallied 36 kills in the win and was led by Ashley Fung's 9 kills.

Rutgers-Newark got off to a slow start and could only muster 14 points in the opening set after their offense stalled, trailing by just three, 12-9. The Bulldogs extended its lead with a 7-1 run that put the Scarlet Raiders in a deficit they were unable to come back from. The second set was much of the same for the Scarlet Raiders as their offense couldn't get off of the ground. Brooklyn took its one-point lead and blew the set open with 16 unanswered points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Scarlet Raiders found their groove in the third set as they took a set away from Brooklyn thanks to a kill from Maynor. In the fourth set, the Scarlet Raiders came close to pushing the match to a 5th set, however, the Bulldogs picked up the win despite a late 7-1 run by the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, October 10 when they host Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 p.m.
