Sousa Scores Game-Winner in 2-1 Win Over TCNJ

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team held onto a 2-1 win over The College of New Jersey on Saturday evening at Frederick Douglass Field.

Rutgers-Newark (4-6-3, 2-1-1) tallied 22 shots and broke even with TCNJ (3-9-1, 1-3) on corner kicks with five. 

The Scarlet Raiders marked their first tally of the game in the 16th minute when Andrew Solomon hit a low cross across the face of the goal to Erick Morales who easily tapped it into the back of the net. Rutgers-Newark remained on the attack but was held to one tally in the opening stanza. Rutgers-Newark quickly added another goal in the second half when Pablo Moreno found Dylan Sousa with an over-the-head flick. Sousa took the pass and headed it into the left side of the goal to increase their lead to 2-0. 

The College of New Jersey wouldn't be blanked in the game as just six minutes after Rutgers-Newark found the back of the net, the Lions beat Pedro Flores for the first time in the game. Colin Kenville curled a corner kick to the head of Sam Synder which just beat the fingertips of Flores. Sousa nearly doubled his tally halfway through the second half when he uncorked a shot from 22 yards out that forced Julian Franco to make the save. With a 2-1 lead the Scarlet Raiders continued to send wave after wave of attacks at the Lions to try and increase their lead, however, the Lions stood stout and were able to prevent the Scarlet Raiders from increasing their tally. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, October 11 when they head to Montclair, NJ to take on Montclair State University.
