Brown Leads Men's Basketball Past Hiram, 74-65, in John K. Adams Consolation Game

NEWARK, NJ | Behind All-Tournament Team member, Ayden Brown, the Scarlet Raiders defeated Hiram College in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at the Golden Dome on Saturday afternoon. 

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) was led by Brown's 14 points, bringing him to 28 points throughout the tournament. Brown also added a team-high six assists and four rebounds. Pascal Dodard scored 11 points while Levi Holton secured 10 of his own. The Scarlet Raiders defense forced 29 turnovers by Hiram (0-3). The Terriers out rebounded the Scarlet Raiders 44-23 led by Ivan Yang's 20 rebounds. Trent Jakacki led the way in the points category with 26 which put him on the All-Tournament Team. 

The Scarlet Raiders and Terriers battled back and forth to open the consolation game with neither team able to gain a foothold in the contest. Trent Jakacki helped the Terriers gain some breathing room with a layup to put his team up by three. Kelvin Marshall later cashed in from the charity stripe to knot the game up at 14. With the momentum of the game swinging in their direction, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 9-4 run behind Pascal Dodard's five points to take a 23-16 lead.  

Rutgers-Newark's suffocating defense began to pay dividends late in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders picked up the pace of play and began to tally fast break points which put them up by 10 with four minutes to go. Levi Holton continued to extend the Scarlet Raiders' lead with an alley-oop from Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd which electrified the crowd. With the 10-5 run before the half, the Scarlet Raiders went into the locker room up 41-28. 

In the second half, Hiram cut into the Scarlet Raiders' lead with a 7-0 run that spanned three minutes. Rutgers-Newark, however, found their offensive groove and pushed their lead out to as much as 16 with 11:30 to go. With time dwindling, Hiram cut the lead down to five with 43 seconds to go, bringing the Terriers within striking distance of the Scarlet Raiders. Holton and Brown went 4-for-4 down the stretch from the line to close out the game to pick up their first win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, November 15 when they take on FDU-Florham in Madison, NJ at 7:00 p.m.
