Scarlet Raiders Tripped Up by Bulldogs at The Golden Dome

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team dropped a non-conference showdown against Brooklyn College on Friday night at The Golden Dome, 71-51.

Rutgers-Newark (1-3) was led by the tandem of Samiyah Horton and Ebony Odom Barnes who scored 19 and 14, respectively. Horton added five steals and three assists. Renee Houston-Allen led the team with seven rebounds and tallied eight points. Brooklyn, (2-1) tallied 54 rebounds as a team led by Sarah James' 14. Offensively, Alina Estrella paced the team with 15 points.

The Bulldogs of Brooklyn College started the game with a 9-3 run that put the Scarlet Raiders behind 14-7 by the end of the first stanza. As the page turned to the second quarter, Ebony Odom Barnes cut the lead down to three with a driving layup. Rutgers-Newark continued its surge and forced Brooklyn to take a timeout with 2:43 remaining in the second after Samiyah Horton cashed in from three-point range. Brooklyn would respond with a 6-3 run to close out the half and take a six-point lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Renee Houston-Allen hit a long-range three to bring Rutgers-Newark within five points. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raiders, they were not able to build off of that momentum switch as Brooklyn went on a 6-0 run to widen the gap. Odom Barnes stopped the bleeding with a corner three which kept Rutgers-Newark in stride with Brooklyn. The Bulldogs would once again go on a run which put them up by 16 to end the third.

Rutgers-Newark registered their highest tally of the game, scoring 18 points in the 4th, however, Brooklyn made sure to keep the Scarlet Raiders at arms length with 22 points of their own.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, November 17 at 12:00 p.m. against Marywood University at The Golden Dome.
