Women's Basketball Loses Hard Fought Battle to Marywood, 72-66

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders dropped their fourth straight on Saturday afternoon, 72-66, to Marywood University at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (1-4) was led by Samiyah Horton offensively with a game-high 25 points. Ebony Odom Barnes registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Arlenny Medina added 10 points. Marywood (2-3) out rebounded Rutgers-Newark 52-34 and picked up a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double from Alli Griscavage.

Rutgers-Newark and Marywood engaged in an intense battle in the opening stanza, going back and forth with neither team able to pull ahead.  As the quarter wore on, however, Marywood began to enlarge the gap between the two squads as the Scarlet Raiders went quiet offensively leading to a 6-0 run to end the quarter for the Pacers.

In the second quarter, the Scarlet Raiders came storming back in a big way. Rutgers-Newark used a 9-0 run, lead by Horton and Medina, spanning 1:40 that put them in the lead 24-22. With a tight score, both teams continued to match each other at the offensive end which led to a one-point lead for the Pacers at the half after a buzzer-beating three fell for Marywood.

The Scarlet Raiders came out of the halftime break cold and as a result, saw their one-point deficit balloon out to 11 with four minutes to go in the third. Marywood was able to keep the Scarlet Raiders from mounting a comeback and bringing it within striking distance. Rutgers-Newark was then caught in a scoring drought that lasted seven minutes which extended their deficit. Odom Barnes broke the cold streak which ignited an 8-4 run by the Scarlet Raiders. The run cut the lead down to six, however, Rutgers-Newark ran out of time.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m. against Ramapo College to open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.
