Women's Basketball Suffers NJAC Opening Night Loss to Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | Samiyah Horton led the Scarlet Raiders women's basketball team this evening with 25 points in a 76-54 loss to Ramapo College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener.

Rutgers-Newark (1-5, 0-1) also received double-digit points from Aliyah Sanchez (11). Tatiana Oliver paced the Scarlet Raiders on the boards with a team-high six rebounds while Horton also tallied five assists and four steals. Ramapo (3-2, 1-0) was led by Jackie Ventricelli's 21 points while Shannon Burns tallied a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.

After falling behind by four early in the opening stanza the Scarlet Raiders rallied back to take a 9-8 lead behind a Horton jumper. Rutgers-Newark's offense then stalled as they would score just four more points the remainder of the quarter while Ramapo scored 15 to take a 23-13 lead into the second. In the second, the Scarlet Raiders closed the gap by scoring 12 and holding the Roadrunners to 14 to go into the break trailing by 22.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders put up their highest marker of the game, netting 17 points in the third. However, the Roadrunners remained a step ahead and scored 20 of their own. Ramapo continued to find the bottom of the net and held off any rally from the Scarlet Raiders to hold onto the win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, November 29 when they head to Montclair, NJ to take on Montclair in another NJAC showdown.
