Men's Basketball Outlasts USMMA, 72-68, Behind Career Day From Holton

NEWARK, NJ | Levi Holton scored a career-high 22 points as the Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team outlasted the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 72-68.

Rutgers-Newark (3-1) won the battle of the boards, edging out USMMA 46-29. Jamir Patterson finished with 13 points and Travis Miles added 10 points and seven rebounds. Russell Ayala led the team with four assists in the win. USMMA (2-2) was led by Drew Zalescik's 24 points while Isaac Vencel paced the team with eight rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders trailed in the first five minutes of action until Travis Miles elevated above the rim and slammed one home to put Rutgers-Newark in the lead, 12-9. USMMA would respond with an 8-2 run in two minutes to propel them into the lead. Rutgers-Newark would fall behind by 11 as a result of a scoring drought. Miles would eventually bring it within seven but Rutgers-Newark didn't build off of that momentum as the Mariners took a 9-point lead into the break.

Rutgers-Newark came out strong in the second half and with 13 minutes left in the game knotted the game up behind a Holton free-throw. Russell Ayala dished out a pass to Miles who converted a mid-range jumper to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead 50-49.  The Scarlet Raiders continued confusing USMMA with solid defense and quick ball movement which allowed Preston Brown to put Rutgers-Newark up 56-51 with 9 minutes to go. Jamir Patterson helped the Scarlet Raiders increase their lead to 67-59 behind a pair of free throws with 1:30 to go. Drew Zalescik refused to go quietly as he hit back-to-back three-point baskets to bring USMMA within three with 14 seconds to go.

Holton made sure to hit his free throws down the stretch to seal the game in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, November 21 when they hit the road to open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play against Ramapo at 7:30 p.m.
