Red Hot Shooting Lead Men's Basketball Past Montclair, 72-60

MONTCLAIR, NJ | One week removed from setting a career-high, Travis Miles set another career-high for himself with 19 points in the 72-60 win over Montclair State University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Wednesday night.

Rutgers-Newark (4-3, 1-1) ended its losing skid and edged the Red Hawks 31-29 in the rebounding category. Levi Holton added 15 points while Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd tallied 15 points. Russell Ayala dished out a team-high six assists while Pascal Dodard was active on the boards with seven rebounds. Montclair (3-2, 1-1) turned the ball over 19 times in the game and shot 42% from the floor.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a small lead to open the game, however, the Scarlet Raiders quickly closed the gap and took the lead behind a Jamir Patterson jumper. With 4:49 remaining in the first half, Miles gave the Scarlet Raiders a 14-point lead with a three-point bucket. The Scarlet Raiders' defense tightened up in the final six minutes of the first half as they held the Red Hawks to just three points during that span while increasing their lead to 19 before the break.

Montclair came out strong out of halftime and cut the lead down to four with 11:16 to go. Rutgers-Newark responded with a 7-0 run which put them ahead by double digits once more. After that run by Montclair which brought it to four, the Scarlet Raiders locked in on defense and slowed the Red Hawks' offense to a crawl which allowed Rutgers-Newark to secure its first NJAC win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m. when they host Kean University.
