Men's Basketball Loses Nailbiter to Kean, 59-53

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad suffered a narrow loss to Kean University on Saturday night, 59-53.

Rutgers-Newark (4-4, 1-2) out rebounded Kean (3-3, 2-1) 38-33, however, the lost the turnover battle 22-21. Levi Holton paced the Scarlet Raiders with 12 points and eight rebounds while Ayden Brown added 9. Brandon Upshaw led the Cougars with 17 points and Phil Brown Jr. grabbed 10 rebounds.

The first half was a low-scoring affair as both squads were tight on defense and continually forced low-percentage shots on both ends. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd cashed in from behind the arc to give the Scarlet Raiders its first lead of the game with 12:38 remaining in the first half. Ayden Brown built upon that with a basket of his own, however, that lead wouldn't last long as Kean went on a 10-2 run. Rutgers-Newark wouldn't let the gap widen any further than that as Pascal Dodard eventually hit a three-point basket and converted from the line to knot the game up at 22. The Cougars would take a 24-22 lead into halftime after a pair of free throws gave them the lead with 13 seconds remaining.

In the second half the defensive battle continued with both teams hopping in the lead for a short period of time. With 8:45 to go, Brown hit a long three to put Rutgers-Newark up by three. The Cougars caught up and took a slight lead but Kelvin Marshall thrust the Scarlet Raiders in front once more with 3:27 to go. Rutgers-Newark offense stalled from that point forward as they scored just four points as Kean ended the game on an 11-4 run.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 when they hit the road to take on Stockton at 7:30 p.m.
