Horton Paces Rutgers-Newark as Women's Basketball Cruises Past Cairn, 69-51

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton picked up where she left off last season and led the Scarlet Raiders to an opening night win over Cairn, 69-51, at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) was led by Horton who scored a game-high 32 points on 11-of-24 shooting. Aliyah Sanchez finished with 10 points, good for second on the team while Leah Connell led the team with 9 rebounds. Cairn (0-1) was led by Makayla Raines' 26 points and Dezaray Bright's 15 rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a quick start to their season, scoring the first six points of the game behind Horton's pair of baskets. Cairn battled their way back into the game after the Scarlet Raiders committed 9 turnovers in the first quarter. Rutgers-Newark made up for their turnovers by shooting a red-hot 53% from the field to take a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.

Rutgers-Newark's defense was the highlight of the second quarter as they held Cairn scoreless for over five minutes while their offense, backed by Horton, extended their lead. Aliyah Sanchez capped an 8-0 run by the Scarlet Raiders off of a pass from Horton. Cairn ended their scoring drought shortly after via a three-ball from Amalia Vamvakitis to cut the lead down to 11. The combo of Sanchez and Horton continued to thrive which further opened up the lead for the Scarlet Raiders. Newcomer, Tatiana Oliver scored her first collegiate basket from behind the arc which ignited the crowd and put Rutgers-Newark up by 17.

Rutgers-Newark's offense cooled off in the third and didn't record their first point until there were three minutes left when Oliver cashed in from range. The Scarlet Raiders eventually regained their mojo and tallied 13 third-quarter points to keep their lead over the Highlanders. The Scarlet Raiders continued to use its suffocating defense to limit Cairn in the fourth as Rutgers-Newark cruised their way to an opening night win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, November 11 for the opening game of the Bridgewater Tip-Off Classic.
